A sanitary tee gives the waste arm a slight downward slope enough for good flow but not enough to create a siphon. In most houses the main vent stack which opens onto your roof is a continuation of the soil stack which is the vertical waste pipe that leads to the sewer. A drainpipe attached to the p trap goes into an opening in the wall. Vent pipe is installed vertically in a way that the pipe protrudes from the roof in most cases.

The vent for a main house sewer usually exits through an exterior wall a few feet above the trap itself. If the vent line is obstructed it can cause a number of problems including. Trap water inside preventing sewer gases from coming back into the house. Item 24126 model 4p08.

When a trap connects to a vertical drain install a tee fitting. A drain pipe is attached to the p trap and exits through the wall to the soil stack where the waste water flows out through another pipe to the sewer or septic tank and sewer gases exit to the roof where the vent line emerges. The two principal features that prevent sewer gases from entering a building through its plumbing drain system are water filled plumbing traps the blue area of the plumbing trap in our sketch at sinks and tubs or other plumbing fixtures and the building plumbing drain vent system labeled in our sketch that vents sewer gases above the building roof. While the pipe allows the escape of gases from wastewater these gases are immediately absorbed by the atmosphere and neutralized.

They re called traps because they do just that. There are two openings in order to allow for the drain system to be easily cleaned in each direction. The most important component of a drain which most people take for granted is the trap. Roof vent pipes similar to a drain trap vents allow sewer gas to leave your home through your roof rather than going elsewhere. Most house traps are double vent meaning they require two plugs or caps. It helps with the pressure of your plumbing system but if your drain trap is blocked and your home isn t properly vented it could cause unsafe conditions. Replacement plugs or caps are extremely inexpensive costing around 10 00 or less each.

In older house traps a fit all plug can be used.
